Hemp Leaf (Asanoha) Sashiko Sampler

The Hemp Leaf (Asanoha) Sashiko Sampler is a cotton sashiko sampler with a pre-printed design.

This traditional Japanese motif is available pre-printed on cherry red, indigo, and French blue fabric. Each sampler panel measures 12″ x 12″, printed in Australia by Indigo Niche.

About the design

The motif of the hemp or flax leaf (asa – hemp; no – of; ha – leaf)  is known in Buddhism to represent radiating light, or the inner light of the soul. It was a tradition for Japanese newborns to be clothed in swaddling fabric featuring the Asanoha design, as a blessing so the child may grow strong and healthy.

This is one of the most well-known and popular traditional sashiko designs used today.
