Our special guest tutor for the May 2022 Tamborine Quilt & Sashiko Retreat is expert Japanese quilter and sashiko designer Hiroe Mogi. She will be hosting a workshop that teaches students the art of Foundation Piecing, using one of her most celebrated quilt patterns: Hana-bi (‘fireworks’). This is a rare opportunity to learn this technique from a true master of the art.
Hiroe has been teaching Foundation Piecing and English Paper Piecing for many years, and is known for creating stunning quilts using contemporary Japanese fabrics.
Hiroe was born in Nagoya Japan and has lived in Australia for the last 25 years. Under her boutique label HM Textiles, she is an importer and wholesaler of curated Japanese Fabrics and a sashiko designer. During this time she has made many quilts to demonstrate the use of the Japanese fabrics she imports.
In the last 15 years she has become well known worldwide for her artistry producing Pre-Printed Sashiko Designs onto fabric.
The video below showcases a number of her quilts, which include log cabin and crazy quilt patterns, some of which incorporate sashiko stitching and raw edge appliqué.
